Video/ Revolt in Corfu prison, Albanians and Georgians set fire to cells

A tense situation was recorded this Tuesday morning in the Corfu prison, where Albanian and Georgian prisoners violently protested against the recent checks carried out in their cells. According to Greek media, the convicts set fire to mattresses and other objects inside the prison premises, as a sign of revolt against what they call discriminatory treatment.

The incident happened a few days after a surprise search of prisoners' cells, where Greek penitentiary authorities seized several mobile phones. This has caused anger among the group of Albanian and Georgian prisoners, who claim that they have been treated differently from other convicts due to their origins.

"We are treated differently just because we are foreigners. We do not have access to basic rights," said the statements conveyed by local media sources.
Firefighters and prison officers intervened immediately, neutralizing the fire and preventing the flames from spreading further to other prison wards. Fortunately, no injured people are reported.

The Greek authorities have not yet given an official reaction on the protest and the claims raised by the prisoners. However, the incident has brought attention back to the conditions in Greek prisons and the treatment of foreigners in the penitentiary system.
