Biden diagnosed with cancer, questions about his health in the White House

Joe Biden's announcement that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer has revived questions about the health problems the former US president faced while in the White House, writes CNN

In a statement on Sunday, Biden's office said the 82-year-old was diagnosed after visiting a doctor for urinary symptoms.

Some doctors have expressed surprise that the aggressive form of cancer, which has spread to his bones, had not been detected earlier.

Others pointed out that cancers can grow quickly without the patient showing symptoms - and that men over 70 are not being checked regularly.

President Donald Trump told reporters Monday that his predecessor should have been more transparent with the public, suggesting — without providing evidence — that the cancer diagnosis was hidden.

"I think it's very sad actually. I'm surprised the public wasn't notified a long time ago," Trump said at a White House event.

"It can take years to get to this level of danger. So, look, it's a very, very sad situation. I feel very bad about this and I think people should try to find out what happened."

Biden has yet to respond to Trump's comments, which came amid reports that Democratic aides tried to hide from the public other worsening health conditions ahead of the 2024 election.
