Threat against President Osmani, KMDLNJ: Risk to security and democracy

The Council for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms (KMDLNj) has reacted strongly to the death threats that, according to reports, have been sent to the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, via email. In the published statement, KMDLNj expresses deep concern about the increasing use of threats as a tool for political gain, considering this an alarming trend in the country's political scene.

According to the KMDLNJ, the threats are unrelated to the constitutional function of the President, implying that the motives behind them are political. The organization underlines that the phenomenon of threats is also expanding towards journalists and other public figures, while the punishments for these cases continue to be “almost symbolic”.

“Recently, due to an escalation of inter-party relations, threats have been used as a means to achieve political goals,” the KMDLNJ said in a statement.
The organization calls on the Kosovo Police to act immediately and seriously in investigating this case, demanding the identification and arrest of the person responsible as soon as possible.

“The Kosovo Police has sufficient professional capacity and successful experience in handling these cases, so it is expected that the threat maker will be arrested quickly and held accountable before the law,” the response further states.
Meanwhile, the President’s husband, Prindon Sadriu, has reacted through a Facebook post, indicating that the threats are repeated and direct, not only against the President, but also against her family members. He warns that this situation poses a serious risk to the security of the family, but also to the institutional stability of the country.

Sadriu emphasizes that the threats have been made by anonymous profiles but also by public figures and qualifies them as open calls for violence. He also criticizes the institutional silence, which he considers as complicity and indirect incitement to this threatening climate.
