Kosovo bans chicken imports from Brazil

Kosovo bans chicken imports from Brazil

The Food and Veterinary Agency has announced that it will temporarily ban the import of chicken meat and other poultry products from Brazil as of Tuesday, May 20.

This decision was made as a result of an outbreak of bird flu on a commercial farm in the state of Rio Grande, Brazil, confirmed on May 16, 2025 by Brazilian authorities.

This decision is said to aim to protect public health and prevent the possible spread of the disease in the territory of Kosovo.

"Bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease that affects birds and, in rare cases, can be transmitted to humans. Although there is no evidence that consuming poultry meat or eggs can cause infection, the import ban is a precautionary measure to ensure the food safety of citizens. This decision is in line with international practices and actions taken by other countries, including the European Union, China, and other countries that have suspended imports of chicken meat from Brazil after the outbreak was confirmed," the AUVA statement said.

The ban will remain in effect until further notice, based on the epidemiological situation in Brazil and the reassessment of the risk by the FVA.
