Chocolate will reach high prices! Cocoa production in serious crisis

The production of cocoa, the main ingredient of chocolate and an important basis in the preparation of many foods or desserts, is being seriously threatened by climate change and a major decline in biodiversity in producing countries.

The author of the report published on Wednesday, Camilla Hyslop, says that these are not just abstract threats - they are already having a real impact on businesses, jobs and the price of food that reaches consumers' tables.

According to the study, by the European Climate Foundation, the European Union sources most of its important food from countries that are highly vulnerable to the climate crisis and have little protection for biodiversity.

The case of cocoa is particularly worrying. The EU imports almost 97% of its cocoa from countries that are unprepared for climate challenges and 77% from countries with poor biodiversity.

Most of it comes from West Africa, where farmers face severe droughts, plant diseases and widespread deforestation.

Meanwhile, rising sugar prices and a shortage of cocoa are putting even more pressure on the chocolate industry in Europe.

If action is not taken quickly, many beloved products, such as chocolate, could become much more expensive or, worse yet, rarer.
