Former Ukrainian politician shot dead near a school in Madrid

A 52-year-old man, identified as Andrei Portnov, was killed Wednesday morning at the entrance to the American School in Pozuelo de Alarcón, an elite neighborhood on the outskirts of Madrid. The serious incident occurred at around 9:15 a.m., shortly after the victim had dropped his children off at the school.

According to sources from the EFE agency and the Spanish Interior Ministry, Portnov was shot several times in the back and head while getting into his vehicle. The perpetrators, still unidentified, quickly fled towards a wooded area near the scene.

Emergency crews arrived immediately, but found that the 52-year-old had died at the scene. The incident caused panic in the area, as it occurred during rush hour, with many parents and children present at the school premises.

Andrei Portnov was a prominent political figure in Ukraine, known for his pro-Russian orientation. He had served as a close advisor and deputy head of the presidential administration under ousted former president Viktor Yanukovych. Portnov was the subject of several international investigations for corruption and embezzlement, and was rumored to have ties to Kremlin interests, particularly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Spanish National Police are investigating all leads, including that of a score-settling incident. Experts from the Scientific Police and Homicide Group V are at the scene, collecting evidence to shed light on the circumstances of the crime.

Meanwhile, the American School in Madrid has refused to comment on the incident, confirming only that at the time of the incident, students and parents were inside the building awaiting clarification from the authorities.

Investigations are ongoing, as Spanish authorities are pursuing the perpetrators and motive of this shocking murder that has raised security concerns in one of the safest areas of the capital.
