"Better in prison than in Gjadra"/ 42-year-old Moroccan commits suicide in cell in Italy, refused to return to Albania

"Better in prison than in Gjadra"/ 42-year-old Moroccan commits
Another tragedy has struck the Italian prison system. Hamid Badoui, a 42-year-old Moroccan national who was in a Turin prison, has taken his own life. His suicide has shocked not only the migrant community, but also institutions dealing with human rights and immigration management.

According to Italian media, Hamidi had been living in Italy for more than a decade and had clearly expressed to his lawyer that he did not want to return to Albania, where he was scheduled to be sent as part of the agreement between Rome and Tirana on the management of migrants:
"Prison is better than the camp in Gjadra, I will not return to Albania," were his words before taking the extreme act.

The Italian Office for Asylum and Immigration expressed its sorrow for this loss and raised concerns about the consequences of the new migration policies. According to the statements given, the Albanian model – promoted as an “innovative” solution by the Italian government – is becoming a symbol of isolation, punishment and denial of fundamental rights.

Reports by Italian organizations and media say that camps in Albania, including the center in Gjadra, offer inadequate living conditions, limited access to health services and legal aid, as well as administrative detention that is being used more as a form of punishment than as a measure of last resort, as required by international law.

Badoui's death is seen as a direct consequence of a policy that treats refugees and migrants not as people in need, but as a danger to be excluded. Protests, self-harm and suicides have reportedly raised the alarm about the dire conditions in these centers, both in Italy and Albania.

Yesterday, the Italian Senate approved by a vote of confidence the transformation into law of the decree for the transfer of immigrants to Albania, which has brought a wave of reactions and criticism for embracing a policy based on fear and propaganda, to the detriment of fundamental human rights.
