Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy found guilty of corruption, risks 10

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been found guilty of corruption by a French court.

Sarkozy, who was president from 2007 to 2012, flatly denied all charges against him during the 10-day trial that took place late last year. The 66-year-old politician is suspected of trying to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about a legal action in which he was involved.

Before the court, he claimed he never committed the slightest crime of corruption. In any case, the indictment against Sarkozy under the criminal code provides for prison sentences of 10 years, as well as a fine, which in this case amounts to 1 million euros.

However, prosecutors proposed a four-year sentence with a minimum sentence of two years to the former president, while the same proposal was made to his co-defendants, lawyer Thierry Herzog and Judge Gilbert Azimber.

For their part, prosecutors said both Sarkozy and Herzog tried to bribe Judge Aziber for information on an investigation into allegations that the former French president had illegally received funds from L'Oreal's successor, Lillian Betancourt, during the campaign. his successful presidency in 2007.

She even told the court that in one of the conversations it is clear that Sarkozy had promised to intervene, in order for Azimber to get a specific job in Monaco.

Sarkozy's lawyer, Jacqueline Lafon, dismissed prosecutor Gijon's arguments, talking about the empty substance categories and arguing that the transcripts were conversations between friends.

Sarkozy's lawyers have used this argument in their defense, but prosecutors have insisted that French law makes no exceptions to successful or failed bribery attempts.
