Italy bans the use of English words in official communications - heavy fines for

Italy's ruling party has proposed a law to ban the use of English words in official communications, threatening fines of up to 100,000 euros.

The right-wing nationalist party "Brothers of Italy" introduced the bill, declaring that the spread of English "demeans and damages" the Italian language.

The bill requires public officials to have knowledge of the Italian language and prohibits the use of English words and phrases in official documentation.

To become a law, the proposal must be approved by both houses of the parliament.

The bill to ban anglicisms comes after Italy also banned lab-grown foods to protect its agri-food heritage.
