Von der Leyen: Iran must not have nuclear weapons

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that diplomacy was ultimately best for Iran, but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Von der Leyen said she agreed with Netanyahu in a phone call that "Iran should not have nuclear weapons . "

Von der Leyen has previously criticized Israel's actions in Gaza, but said that its failure to comply with UN rules on the nuclear watchdog means Israel "has the right to defend itself."

"Iran is the main source of regional instability ," she added.

Von der Leyen is currently in Canada attending the G7 summit, where she said the conflict between Israel and Iran will be addressed, along with Russia's ongoing occupation of Ukraine.

"The same type of drones and ballistic missiles designed and manufactured by Iran are indiscriminately striking cities in Ukraine and Israel. As such, these threats must be addressed together ," she said.
