IAEA holds emergency meeting today after Israeli attacks on Iran nuclear

The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will hold an emergency session today at its headquarters in Vienna to discuss the consequences of Israel's military attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities.

The meeting was called at the request of Iran and supported by several member states, including Russia, China and Venezuela.

Initially, Iran had intended to submit a resolution to formally condemn the Israeli attacks. However, diplomatic sources quoted in the media have said that such a text was unlikely to receive a majority of votes. For this reason, Iran is now aiming for the adoption of a more general declaration, which would nevertheless include a condemnation of the Israeli actions.

The extraordinary session comes at a time of high military tensions between Israel and Iran, following air strikes that targeted Iranian nuclear centers in Natanz and Fordow.

The use of military force is not envisaged as a means of resolving nuclear issues under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Iran insists that the international community and the IAEA itself must respond with condemnation to these actions. However, given the current geopolitical circumstances, a clear and coordinated response seems unlikely.

It still remains unclear whether this meeting will have any concrete impact on reducing the escalation or on the possibility of an immediate ceasefire between the two countries, which continue to exchange retaliatory fire with increased intensity.
