Canada warns of sanctions, Belarus responds by closing embassy in Ottawa

Canada joined the states, which condemn the action of Belarus, which forced the downing of a plane to arrest a journalist. Canada said it was considering tightening existing sanctions on Belarus.

"The behavior of the Belarusian regime is savage, illegal and completely unacceptable ... we also condemn this kind of dangerous interference in civil aviation," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters, Reuters reports .

Following this stay, Belarus announced that it would close its embassy in Canada. The Belarusian Embassy in Ottawa said it would close on September 1, after 24 years of operation.

Canada advised airlines and aircraft "to avoid operating at any altitude within Belarusian airspace due to serious security concerns posed in civil aviation operations," according to a joint statement by Foreign Minister Marc Garneau and Transport Minister Omar Alghabra.
