The Lithuanian Parliament will decide today whether to build a high metal barbed wire fence on its border with Belarus to stop migrants.

The number of the latter who have crossed into Lithuania via Belarus has reached record figures.

Authorities in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland have accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of using migrants to pressure the EU to lift sanctions against his country.

If approved by parliament, Lithuania will build a four-meter-high metal fence, covered with barbed wire to a length of 508 km. The construction of this barrier will cost 152m euros.

In Parliament, it will also be discussed whether the Lithuanian army will be allowed to patrol the border and temporarily restrict the asylum seeker. Currently only border guards are allowed to patrol the border.

This year about 4,026 individuals from Belarus have crossed illegally into Lithuania, a country of 2.8 million. Most come from Iraq, followed by the Republic of Congo and Cameroon, according to the Lithuanian Border Guard Service.
