The World Health Organization has identified that the Covid-19 vaccine produced by China's Sinovac Biotech is effective, but some important data on the risk of side effects are lacking.

WHO experts reviewed the Sinovac vaccine from clinical trials in China, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey and Chile. The assessment came shortly after experts had expressed "very low confidence" in the data provided by the Chinese manufacturer regarding the risk of serious side effects in some patients.

The Sinovac vaccine has been authorized in 32 countries with 260 million doses distributed. "We are very confident that 2 doses of CoronaVac are effective in preventing Covid-19 in adults (18-59 years old)," said WHO experts.

They cited gaps in evidence for the safety of these vaccines in pregnancy and in cases with side effects for people with concomitant diseases.
