Pfizer seeks to apply a booster vaccine: Two doses do not provide enough

Vaccine maker Pfizer said it has identified that its dose immunity against coronavirus has weakened and that it is stepping up efforts to develop a booster dose that will protect people from the new variants.

Pfizer said it would seek authorization for urgent use of a third booster dose from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Hours after Pfizer released its statement, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control issued a joint statement saying Americans do not need an additional dose.

"Americans who have been fully vaccinated do not need a booster dose at this time, " they said.

Pfizer and her partner BioNTech said the evidence was building that people's immunity begins to weaken after they are vaccinated. The Pfizer vaccine requires two doses to ensure complete immunity.
