US launches mass deportation of Haitian immigrants

The U.S. began deporting immigrants from Haiti who were staying in Texas and tried to block others from crossing the border into Mexico. Foreign media reports on one of the fastest- growing deportations of immigrants to America.

Three flights of 145 passengers each arrived in Port-au-Prince, and Haiti said six flights are expected Tuesday. Altogether, U.S. authorities moved to deport many of the more than 12,000 immigrants stationed on a bridge in Del Rio, Texas, after passing through Ciudad Acuña, Mexico.

When the border closed yesterday, immigrants initially found other ways to cross until they faced federal and state law enforcement. An Associated Press reporter saw immigrants from Haiti crossing the river to go to the US.

Hundreds of them passed successfully, while others were apprehended by police. Mexico said yesterday it would also begin deporting Haitians to their homeland.

A government official said the flights would be operated from cities near the U.S. border and the border with Guatemala, where the largest group remains. Haitians have emigrated to the US since 2010, following a devastating earthquake.
