Airport destroyed / Russian forces approach Kiev, attack civilian areas. Zelensky: NATO lacks courage

Airport destroyed / Russian forces approach Kiev, attack civilian areas.

An airport in the western Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk has been completely destroyed by a Russian air strike, said city mayor Ruslan Martsinkiv.

According to preliminary information, there are no casualties. This is the third attack on the airport, Martsinkiv said. The airstrikes also escalated at a military base near the northwestern city of Lviv as Russian forces expanded their offensive in Ukraine.

Lviv is a cultural center of Ukraine and the historic city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also a crossing point for citizens leaving the war.

Meanwhile Russian troops are approaching Kiev and significant destruction is being seen in towns and cities. Most of the Russian ground forces are about 25 kilometers from the center of the Ukrainian capital, the UK Ministry of Defense said in its latest intelligence assessment.

The cities of Kharkhiv, Mariupol, Mykolaiv, Dnipro, Chernihiv and Sumy are under constant Russian attack. In the besieged city of Mariupol, satellite images showed damage and fires in apartment buildings and gas stations.

Seven civilians, including a woman and a child, were killed by Russian troops as they tried to flee the village of Peremoga in the Kiev region, according to Ukraine's Defense Ministry. Zelensky said 12,729 Ukrainians were successfully evacuated on Saturday.

He added that his country is more united than ever, but sees a "lack of courage on the part of NATO members to unite for Ukraine."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was grateful for international support and begged allies for more help.

"I continue to repeat to our allies and friends abroad; they must continue to do more for our country, for the Ukrainians and for Ukraine. "Because it is not just for Ukraine, but it is for the whole of Europe."
