The shortlist of European Destination of Excellence has been announced. One Turkish destination and two Danes on the shortlist for this year's competition.

Today, the European Commission announced the three selected destinations for the European Destination of Excellence 2022 competition. This initiative rewards the best achievements in sustainable tourism and green transition practices in the smallest destinations in Europe.

Gürsu in Turkey and Middelfart and Thisted in Denmark convinced the panel of independent sustainability experts with their applications and were selected ahead of 40 other application destinations. The 2022 prize winner will be selected from this shortlist of three. Learn more about each of the shortlisted destinations here.

European Destinations of Excellence is an initiative of the European Union, implemented by the European Commission. It aims to recognize and reward smaller destinations that have created successful strategies to enhance sustainable tourism through green transition practices.

The competition is based on the principle of promoting the development of sustainable tourism in destinations that bring value to the economy, the planet and the people. The initiative covers EU countries as well as non-EU countries participating in the COSM program. The competition addresses smaller tourist destinations which can showcase their outstanding achievements in sustainability and inspire other tourist destinations in their green transition.
