Death of dissident in Ukraine, Lukashenko denies allegations: Who was it to me? Just nobody

Death of dissident in Ukraine, Lukashenko denies allegations: Who was it to me?

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko has denied allegations that his security services were involved in the death of dissident Vitaly Shishov, who was found hanged in neighboring Ukraine last week.

"Who was he to me and to Belarus? To us he was just nobody," President Alexander Lukashenko told reporters.

Vitaly Shishov was organizing aid for Belarusians fleeing Lukashenko's post-election crackdown in Ukraine.

There have been anti-Lukashenko rallies since the controversial vote a year ago. Weeks of mass protests were the biggest challenge to Lukashenko's 27-year rule.

Last year police arrested thousands of anti-Lukashenko protesters as they broke up demonstrations, using batons and tear gas. The opposition says more than 600 political prisoners are still in jail.

Ukrainian police investigating Shishov's death are investigating whether it was suicide or a murder that looked like suicide. He was found hanged in a park near his home in the capital Kiev.

Colleagues in his organization, the Belarusian House in Ukraine, suspect Lukashenko's agents were involved and say Shishov had been under surveillance.
