Two Israeli Embassy staff members killed in Washington

Two staff members at the Israeli Embassy in Washington were killed Wednesday evening near the capital's Jewish Museum, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said.

"Two Israeli Embassy staff members were knocked unconscious tonight near the Jewish Museum in Washington DC," Noem said in a post on X. "We are actively investigating and working to obtain more information to share."

Speaking at a press conference, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith said law enforcement believes the shooting was carried out by a single suspect who is now in custody.

The suspect, whom Smith identified as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, was seen pacing back and forth outside the museum before approaching a group of four people, pulling out a handgun and opening fire, shooting the two victims.

After the shooting, Smith said the suspect entered the museum and was detained shortly thereafter.
