Convicted of smuggling, Albanian arrested at Verona airport

A 29-year-old Albanian man, wanted since 2022 and sentenced in absentia to 2.3 years in prison for illegal immigrant trafficking, was arrested on March 5 by Italian police at Catullo Airport in Verona.

The young man, who was arriving on a flight from Tirana, was stopped during a passport check by State Police officers at customs, who checked his document and discovered that his name was the subject of a prison order issued by the Verona Public Prosecutor's Office. The Albanian had been convicted in 2018 for immigration-related crimes.

The 29-year-old had previously had problems with the law in Italy. In 2015, he was in fact expelled from the national territory by the Court of Varese, with a provision prohibiting his entry for five years. This measure was taken after the suspect was arrested for drug possession and trafficking in 2014.

Despite the expulsion, in 2018 the Albanian had attempted to re-enter Italy, passing through Verona airport, without the necessary authorization, violating the ban.

Following his arrest, the 29-year-old will have to serve a sentence of two years and three months in prison, as well as a fine of two thousand euros. After formal procedures, he was transferred to the Montorio prison, where he will remain at the disposal of the Judicial Authority, for the execution of the sentence.
