"I was left without a job", Olimbi Hoxhaj: I was discriminated because

The executive director of the association of people with HIV/AIDS, Olimbi Hoxhaj, spoke about how an infected person is stigmatized and discriminated against by society.

She said that in Albania there has been an improvement in institutional approaches, but individual approaches remain problematic.

As a person affected by AIDS, she said that she herself has experienced all kinds of stigmatization and discrimination even at work because of this disease that people still do not know well.

" It is not that the individual approaches have changed much, but the institutional approaches have changed. We have improved laws, improved strategies, different programs. We have advanced in the institutional part, but we are still continuing in the community part.

Stigma and discrimination continues to be high. Even today, we have people who do not shake hands, hug, stay in an HIV positive environment. I have felt and still feel discrimination today. I have experienced being shunned, denied, discriminated against, left without a job.

I have experienced it at all levels of stigma. What I can say today is that this is more camouflaged, because the individual is more empowered and faces any reaction from ignorance", said Hoxhaj.
