Sir Frank Williams, the founder and former director of the Williams Racing team, has died at the age of 79.

According to The Guardian, the team won the F1 pilot title seven times and the constructors' championship on nine occasions under Williams.

A statement from Williams Racing said: "With great sadness, on behalf of the Williams family, the team can confirm the death of Sir Frank Williams CBE, founder and former director of the Williams Racing team, at the age of 79. "Hospitalized on Friday, Sir Frank passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his family."

The statement of the team continued: “Today we pay homage to our much loved and inspiring figure. Frank will be missing a lot.

The Williams team enjoyed their first victory in the F1 race at the 1979 British Grand Prix in Silverstone with Clay Regazzoni at the helm. In 1980, Australian Alan Jones led the team towards the titles of pilots and constructors for the first time.
