An Iranian man, who had been living in a Paris airport for 18 years, has died. Left in diplomatic limbo, in 1988 Mehran Karimi Nasseri made his home in a small part of the Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport. His experience inspired the 2004 film The Terminal, starring Tom Hanks.

Nasseri was granted the right to live in France but ended up returning to the airport a few weeks ago, where he died of natural causes, an airport official told AFP. Born in 1945 in the Iranian province of Khuzestan, Nasseri first flew to Europe in search of his mother. He spent several years living in Belgium, after being deported from countries such as the UK, the Netherlands and Germany for not having the correct immigration documents. He then went to France, where he made his home in Terminal 2F of the airport.

Sitting on his bench, surrounded by carts carrying his accumulated wealth, he spent his days writing about his life in a notebook and reading books and newspapers. His story attracted international media attention and attracted the attention of Stephen Spielberg, who directed The Terminal, starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones. After the film's release, journalists flocked to speak with the man who had inspired the famous Hollywood film. At one point, Nazzeri, who called himself "Sir Alfred," was giving up to six interviews a day, reports Le Parisien.

Despite being granted refugee status and the right to stay in France in 1999, he remained at the airport until 2006, when he was taken to hospital to be treated for an illness. He then spent time living in a hostel using the money he received for the film, reports French newspaper Libération.

Nasseri returned to the airport a few weeks ago, where he lived until he died, an airport official said. Several thousand euros were found in his possession, the official added.
