CIA director secret meeting with de facto Taliban leader in Kabul

The Washington Post reports that CIA Director William Burns held a secret meeting in Kabul on Monday with de facto Taliban leader Abdul Ghani Baradar.

The paper says that according to US officials familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the talks probably included the August 31 deadline for the U.S. military to complete air travel of U.S. citizens and Afghan allies.

The CIA declined to comment on the report.

It follows the holding of the G7 summit, where Western partners want the US to extend beyond August 31 the mission of rescuing tens of thousands of people from Kabul.

The Allies warn that they will not be able to evacuate all Afghans fleeing the Taliban by then, but the latter have warned of the consequences if the deadline is not met.
