Why is the eastern Donbass region of Ukraine important?

There has been a lot of talk about Russia's offensive in Ukraine's eastern region, the Donbas, so below you will find out why this area is so important to both Russia and Ukraine.

We go back to 2014 when Russia occupied the Ukrainian territory of Crimea, along with more than a third of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region. The Donbas region consists of the neighboring Luhansk and Donetsk regions. The pro-Russian separatists created here the so-called People's Republics, the self-proclaimed People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Fighting between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces has continued along a 420km demarcation line since 2014, where the conflict has claimed more than 14,000 lives. Russian President Vladimir Putin has made repeated baseless accusations that Ukraine has committed genocide in this eastern region, using it as an excuse to start a war with Ukraine.

Russia had initially hoped to occupy the Ukrainian capital Kiev and overthrow the Ukrainian government, but it was forced to withdraw after conducting a disorganized operation that failed to meet its objectives.

With Russia now focusing its attention on Luhansk and Donetsk, this campaign could dictate the course of the war. If Russia dominates, it means that Ukraine is losing not only land, but perhaps most of its most capable military forces, paving the way for Moscow to seize more territory and dictate its terms. Kiev. It may also seek to annex the region as it did with Crimea in 2014. A Russian failure could prompt Ukraine to launch a counter-offensive - and possibly lead to political unrest for the Kremlin.

Russian forces have achieved gains in Luhansk and Donetsk so far, controlling more than 95% of Luhansk and about half of Donetsk. They now control the entire Azov Sea coast, including Mariupol, the entire Kherson region, and much of the Zaporizhia region.
