Berisha–Plenković meeting: Integration must be based on merit and meeting

During the proceedings of the International Democrat Union (IDU) Forum in Zagreb, a delegation from the Democratic Party, led by the Chairman of the DP, Sali Berisha, held a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, in a very friendly and constructive spirit.

The discussions focused on political developments in Albania and the region, as well as the European integration process of the Western Balkan countries. Croatia's successful experience as a model of integration based on merit and the real fulfillment of democratic standards was particularly appreciated.

At the start of the meeting, Berisha expressed deep gratitude for the continued support of Croatia, a friendly country, to Albania and Albanians on the path towards the European Union, especially the support of Prime Minister Plenković, who is also President of HDZ.

He further expressed deep concern over the situation in Albania, emphasizing the democratic regression and autocratic tendencies of the government, the lack of free and fair elections, the influence of organized crime and drug cartels on the electoral process and the country's economic life, the high levels of corruption and the lack of accountability and checks and balances.

Both sides agreed that the European integration process should be based on merit and the fulfillment of democratic standards, avoiding an approach based solely on geostrategic considerations.

For his part, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković reaffirmed Croatia's support for Albania and the European integration process, underlining the importance of a merit-based process.
