Today, 14 years since Albania's membership in NATO

Today marks 15 years since Albania's historic membership in NATO. The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, delivered today a message for the 15th anniversary of Albania's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The full message of the President of the Republic:

" April 1, 2009 brought to life the Euro-Atlantic vision of the Albanians to be part of the most powerful political-military Alliance of our time.

This membership fulfilled the long-standing aspiration of the Albanian people, returning it to its western affiliation, embodied in the philosophy of our national hero, Gjergj Kastriot, as the strategist of the first political-military alliance with the West.

Albania's membership in NATO is one of the most important dates in our national history.

Grateful to the Albanian people, the USA and allies, who made this membership possible.

In these 15 years in NATO, Albania has brought more security to the country, the region and the Euro-Atlantic space.

Proud of the members of our Armed Forces, as well as Albanian girls and boys in peacekeeping missions and NATO operations, such as: Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Latvia and the Aegean Sea.

Albania will continue to be steadfast to, together with allies, defend freedom and contribute to a world in peace ."

Albania's first appearance as a full member of NATO was made at the Alliance Summit held in Strasbourg/Kehl on April 4, 2009.

While on April 7, 2009, at the headquarters of the Alliance in Brussels, the official ceremony of raising the flags of Albania and Croatia in NATO took place, while a day later the Secretary General of the Alliance paid an official visit to Albania during which he was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Tirana.
