The Supreme Court returns Lazarat's case to the Criminal Court for retrial

The Supreme Court has decided to return for retrial to the Special Court the case file of five defendants accused of participating in the Lazarat arson group, who opposed police officers with weapons during the 2014 operation.

The defendants, Arbjon Aliko, Gurgaz Skënderi, Alfred Proko, Enrik Skënderi and Beqo Brahimaj, were initially sentenced by the Serious Crimes Court to a total of 52 years in prison, a lighter sentence than the one requested by the prosecution, which was 57 years. This decision was also upheld by the Court of Appeal.

After reviewing the case, the Supreme Court decided to return the file for retrial to the Special Court, thus leaving open the possibility of a new review of the case. The initial sentences were:

Arbjon Aliko: 13 years in prison

Gurgaz Skënderi: 11 years in prison

Enrik Skënderi: 10 years in prison

Alfred Proko: 10 years in prison

Beqo Brahimaj: 8 years in prison

The five defendants are part of the group known as “Gate Mahmutaj,” and their trial has continued independently of that of the group’s leader, Gate Mahmutaj. The latter was sentenced to 17 years in prison for resisting police forces in a 2014 operation, during which they fired weapons, including heavy artillery.
