VOA: Albanians rank behind Georgians for forced returns from European countries

Albanian citizens rank second after Georgians for the high number of voluntary or forced returns from a European country to a third country during 2024.

According to data from the European Statistical Agency, Eurostat, and the Border Protection Agency, FRONTEX, processed by Voice of America, 8,202 Albanian citizens with irregular residence were forced by police authorities to leave a European Union country during 2024.

In 2023, 17,425 Albanian citizens were ordered to leave the EU, and 7,870 of them were effectively returned. In 2021, FRONTEX reported that 5,398 Albanian irregular migrants were forcibly returned, marking an increase compared to the previous year 2020 when 4,801 Albanian citizens were returned.

The high rates of emigration of Albanians continue to produce high indicators of forced returns and refusal of residence by European Union countries.

Albanian citizens with removal orders were also discovered in 2024 to be living illegally in one of the European Union countries.

Albanian citizens have been traveling visa-free to the European Union since December 2010, but in cases where they are detected "illegal" by the authorities of a European Union country, they have violated the three-month stay limit in the Schengen area countries or have committed acts outside the visa program for tourist purposes.

According to reports on migration to European Union countries, the activities of people from Albania are mainly related to employment at a time when the conditions of short-term visits do not allow for such a thing or to the commission of criminal offenses in which short-term visitors may be involved.

In 2024, the European border protection organization FRONTEX said in a report that it assisted European Union member states in returning 56,262 individuals with irregular residence in these countries, marking an increase of 43% compared to the previous year.

According to FRONTEX, Georgians, Albanians, Turks, Colombians and Moldovans constituted the top five nationalities with the highest forced or voluntary returns from European countries during 2024.

Meanwhile, according to preliminary data from the Albanian Ministry of Interior, another 1,120 Albanian citizens with irregular residence and criminal convictions were repatriated from Great Britain to Albania during 2024 in 25 repatriation operations carried out through air transport./VOA
