Belarus: Ukraine is preparing to attack us. EU warns Lukashenko of sanctions

The European Commission on Monday raised the specter of further sanctions against Belarus, urging Minsk to stop spreading "false accusations" against Ukraine and cancel a joint troop buildup with Russia.

Belarus's autocratic leader Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, repeated claims during a meeting with military and security officials that "carrying out attacks on the territory of Belarus is not only being discussed, but being planned in Ukraine."

He also said the two leaders have agreed to establish a joint "regional troop grouping," but did not provide details on where and when such a grouping might be deployed.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Peter Stano told reporters in Brussels that the Commission "takes note of the false allegations" which he called "totally baseless, ridiculous" and "totally unacceptable".

"Ukraine here is the victim. Ukraine is not the aggressor. And we remind the Belarusian regime that Ukraine is under brutal, illegal attack, which is in violation of the UN charter and in violation of international law. And we call on the regime in Minsk to refrain from any involvement of Belarus in this brutal, illegal enterprise.

And we also call on the regime in Minsk to immediately stop allowing the territory of Belarus to serve as a launch pad for airstrikes, including recent missile strikes and drone strikes against Ukraine and targets on Ukrainian territories," he added.
