It is probably premature to give an exhaustive assessment of the possible consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, as there may be many more twists and turns that can await us.
And once we defeat the coronavirus, some of the changes caused by the pandemic in our lives may turn out to be temporary. But given these warnings, it is possible to begin drawing some conclusions right now.
First, it is clear that once a new virus appears that is far more contagious and dangerous than others, it is worthwhile to act aggressively to eradicate it as soon as possible, rather than look forward to hoping to learn more about it.
More than a year after the initial Covid-19 outbreak in China, many of the countries (mainly in the Asia-Pacific region) that took the most aggressive steps to combat the coronavirus appear to be in a much stronger position than the West.
Second, some countries are vaccinating their populations faster than others. At the top are currently countries like the UK, which partly explains the loud calls to ease blockades. Initial data suggest that Covid-19 vaccines not only help reduce the incidence of the disease in a severe form, but also reduce transmission.
And this could turn out to be spectacular news if stronger signs of vaccine efficacy emerge, marking the last start of the pandemic. But if governments lift blockades much sooner than they should, the risk of new coronavirus mutations resistant to current vaccines will increase significantly.
Third, although the first approved vaccines against Covid-19 were adapted from research already conducted for other purposes, the pandemic could permanently improve the entire vaccine development process, from research to clinical trials and entity approval procedures. regulatory.
If that happens, it will help us fight off future Covid-19 variants as well as new pandemics. Meanwhile, the pandemic could also increase the overall efficiency and productivity of the pharmaceutical sector (as opposed to its commercial benefits). So drug companies will probably be able to develop new antibiotics much faster than they currently do.
