"History is repeating itself", Jola Hysaj: We were born in a democracy

Member of the DP Presidency, Jola Hysaj, recalled December 8, 1990, as a historic moment for Albania.

In a recent post on social media, she emphasized that this day brought hope for the realization of the dream "We love Albania like all of Europe", opening a new era for Albanians.

Hysaj expressed her concern about the current situation in the country, where, according to her, after 34 years, the slogan of the youth has been transformed. "We were born in a democracy and we are living in a dictatorship," she writes.

She writes that in recent years, Albania has experienced a massive population exodus, with around 1 million Albanians leaving the country and young people seeing their future abroad.

According to Hysaj, socio-economic insecurity, corruption, and the power's ties to crime are destroying society.

December 8, 1990, was the great call against oppression, tyranny and inhuman isolation. That blessed day for the history of Albania opened the era towards freedom and the birth of democracy, bringing hope in the realization of the much desired dream "We love Albania like all of Europe".

Today, 34 years later, the slogan of the young people was painfully "We were born in democracy and we are living in dictatorship!" Scary how history repeats itself. And it does not repeat itself simply as a political cycle, but tragically also as a social drama. In the final throes of the dictatorship, thousands of Albanians demolished the walls of embassies, bravely broke through the thorny walls, hijacked ships and ran towards the freedom that had been forcibly denied them for 50 years.

Unfortunately, today, 34 years later, when these events should have been only painful memories, the drama has returned frighteningly like a Sisyphean curse. The national hemorrhage is at its highest point. In the last 10 years, almost 1 million Albanians have left the country again. Young people, as soon as they finish high school, run to study around the world, not thinking at all about returning to their homeland.

The cheerful voices of children are no longer heard in many areas of the country and primary schools have sadly remained empty and closed! Socio-economic insecurity, the absolute lack of meritocracy in every area of life, the connections of crime with power and the state, the corruption that annihilates any free competition, that erodes any moral and human values, expel every day young people, entrepreneurial intellectuals and anyone who refuses to obey the regime, which has once again brought back the frightening division of class warfare: Either with us or against us, there is no other way!”

Today, in this country, they have killed hope and LIFE itself has lost its value. Where the tragic murder of a 14-year-old child, right at the school gate, is cynically attempted to minimize because the perpetrators are the darlings of the government.

So everyone, together, young and old, just like in '90, we must stop the destruction of Albania! Today or never!
