AKEP closes 155 Russian online accounts for disinformation in Tirana

Tomi Frashëri, Chairman of AKEP, the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority, stated today that the institution he leads has closed 155 Russian accounts on the Internet, which aimed at disinformation, while another 8 belonged to data hacking groups, as he said .

Mr. Frashëri made these comments during the hearing before the special parliamentary committee against disinformation and other forms of foreign interference in the country's democratic processes, where he spoke, among other things, about the Iranian attacks by "Homeland Justice", which, according to him, were aimed at the destruction of data and operator service collapse.

"Attacks against operators are daily. When the war started in Ukraine, we gathered the operators and told them to scan the situation every day and make it a culture", said Mr. Frashëri.

He added that the first request to block Russian accounts came from the European Commission on March 3, 2022, while Albania was hit by Iranian hackers in July.

"The European Commission requested that 3 websites, as well as other Russian accounts, which took a position and published data in favor of Russian aggression, be closed, because they contained disinformation. Other requests have come from law enforcement bodies for the "Homeland Justice" group. Requests have mainly come from the prosecution in some cases, the Cyber ​​Unit C of the Police and the only instrument to stop these is the law", said Mr. Frashëri.

He added that AKEP conducts permanent checks on authorized persons and that security in this area is maximum, while detailing that these attacks have occurred during holidays and vacations, when operators pay less attention to the system, but this does not happen anymore. , because now professional teams are assigned during holidays and weekends in every season.

Cyber ​​security is a high priority task since the health crisis of the Covid 19 pandemic. AKEP manages 5 critical infrastructures and since February 2022 when the Russian aggression against Ukraine began, it has a maximum attention to foreign harmful interference in the service electronics of the country.
