Commissioner Varhely: The region must complete reforms and apply EU rules
"The region will have to move forward quickly to complete the reforms."
This is what the Commissioner for Neighborhood Expansion, Oliver Varhely, said when he spoke about the Growth Plan, which he described as ambitious.
From the EU-Western Balkans summit, he said that half of the time is left to implement this plan, while he added that the EU should offer all the benefits to the countries that will become members of the European Union.
"Even though we are approaching the end of our mandate, I want to leave something behind, something serious. Tangible. Something that is sensitive to the short and medium term.
The societies of the Western Balkans should be integrated into the EU. The EU must offer all the benefits of membership. This is our idea that comes with the growth plan.
It is an ambitious plan. We have half the time to implement it. The region will have to move forward rapidly to complete the reforms. You must apply EU rules. You can become part of the European market even before you are a member of the EU," he said.
