Part of a Russian spy ring, Britain announces sentences for three Bulgarian

Three Bulgarian citizens were found guilty by a London court on Friday on charges of being part of a spy ring linked to Russia.

Katrin Ivanova, 33, Vanya Gaberova, 30, and Tihomir Ivanchev, 39, all from London, were part of a group of Bulgarians who spied between 2020 and 2023, Reuters reports.

Their plans were exchanged via phone messages, which were later discovered by British police.

Ivanova, Gaberova and Ivanchev pleaded not guilty to charges of collecting useful information for an enemy state, saying they did not know they were helping Russia.

Prosecutors have said that the defendants – along with Orlin Roussev and Bizer Dzhambazov, two other convicts who had pleaded guilty before the trial began – spied on various journalists and planned to organize a fake protest outside the Kazakh embassy in London.

Gaberova, Ivanova, and Ivanchev were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage, while Ivanova was also convicted of possessing multiple false identity documents.
