EPP hits Rama: The state has been seized by organized crime and corruption,

Two days after her visit to Tirana, where she also met with the Democratic Party, the Secretary General of the European People's Party (EPP) Dolors Montserrat spoke about the situation of the rule of law in Albania, the electoral framework and corruption.

In an interview with Syri TV, Montserrat emphasized the importance of equality before the law, stating that otherwise, we have totalitarianism and autocracy.

"The law must be equal for all. Beyond the law there is only totalitarianism and autocracy. Laws cannot be made for the untouchables. Laws cannot be made only for a few people to convert them into untouchables. If not, if this does not happen, outside the law we have totalitarianism, autocracy and there is no talk of democracy ," Montserrat declared.

Regarding electoral reform, Montserrat called for inclusiveness to have a pro-European government, fight against corruption, and free elections.

"To achieve this, there is a need for media freedom, for judicial independence, for electoral reform carried out with the opposition, and here we need the entire opposition. There must be a unity of the entire opposition. I think that if there was a broad unity, there are more opportunities to change the government. In order to have a pro-European government, the rule of law, the fight against corruption and free elections. Because if you do not do these things, it means that you do not have the European standards to be a member of the EU ," said the EPP secretary.

Focusing on the level of corruption, Montserrat highlighted the state's capture by organized crime and systemic corruption.

"The EPP's position is that we support Albania on its journey to become an EU member, but there are many things that need to be done here. The first thing we need is to unite the entire opposition to come to power and for this opposition to come to power to have a government based on transparency, the fight against corruption and good governance. Because this is what Albanians need. We have seen with our own eyes and heard with our own ears. Civil society also told us that there is a capture of the state by organized crime, that there is systemic corruption here in Albania and that we must protect the independence of the judiciary, this is very important. But, above all, the most important thing that Albania needs is to have free and fair elections. Everyone has told us this: we need free and fair elections ," she declared.
