US Secretary of State Blinken congratulates Albanians on Flag Day: We look

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has congratulated Albanians on the occasion of the 109th anniversary of Albania's independence. In his message, Blinken says Albanians have demonstrated great strength and resilience by rejecting the suppression of a communist dictatorship and building a democracy committed to tolerance, human rights and European integration.

He goes on to say that the US expects to deepen relations with Albania.

"The United States is committed to supporting Albania's democratic institutions, justice and economic reforms, and the future of the European Union," he said.

Blinken's full message:

On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Albania on the 109th anniversary of Independence. Our deep and enduring friendship dates back more than a century to the time when President Woodrow Wilson strongly defended Albania's independence at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919.
Since then, Albanians have demonstrated great strength and resilience by rejecting oppression. of a communist dictatorship and building a democracy committed to tolerance, human rights and European integration. Albania demonstrated this spirit again this year by opening its doors to Afghans in need, and they continue to provide a safe haven as thousands of Jews did during World War II and other groups fleeing persecution in recent decades.
In 2021, we marked the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations, reflecting on all that the Americans and Albanians have achieved together since 1991. Today we are allies within NATO and next year we will serve together in the Council of the UN Security Council. The United States is committed to supporting Albania's democratic institutions, justice and economic reforms, and its future in the European Union.
We look forward to further deepening our friendship and remain proud to call Albania a friend, partner and ally.
