Albania ranks first in the region and fifth in Eastern Europe and Central Asia for the number of Covid-19 infections between January 2020 and September 2021, according to a study published by The Lancet.

The study, which examined coronavirus infections and deaths in 177 countries, found that the infection rate per 1,000 inhabitants in Albania is 870.

It also indicated that the infection rate was 433 per 1,000 inhabitants, with Afghanistan scoring the highest at 988.

Northern Macedonia ranks after Albania, with an infection rate of 838 per 1000 inhabitants. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia had infection rates of 717 and 552, respectively.

Albania ranks positively in terms of its infection-to-mortality ratio. It has a rate of 4.49 per 1000 inhabitants compared to 5.43 in Bosnia and Herzegovina and 6.52 in northern Macedonia. However, the global average was 3.4.

Earlier there were suspicions about the casualty figures reported by the Albanian authorities. Finally, Health Minister Ogerta Manastirliu said it was too early to declare victory over the pandemic, as cases have been consistently high.
