Kovacevski resigns from the leadership of SDSM

Dimitar Kovacevski resigned from the post of party chairman, Social Democratic League of Macedonia (LSDM).

Before the General Council of SDSM, Kovacevski justified the act of resignation with the deep defeat of the party in the presidential and parliamentary elections that were held on May 8.

SDSM's candidate for president, Stevo Pendarovski, was defeated by Gordana Silanovska-Davkova from VMRO DPMNE, with a margin of 300,000 votes.

Even in the parliamentary elections, the SDSM suffered a deep defeat, managing to get only 18 deputies' mandates, compared to the 58 that VMRO won.

"In the parliamentary and presidential elections, the SDSM suffered a defeat, receiving a heavy blow, not only from the citizens, but also from sympathizers, some from the current within the party, as well as some from members of the party organized in another entity political", said Kovacevski, asking the other senior leaders of the party to resign.

Kovčevski took over the leadership of SDSM from the former Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Zoran Zaev, who resigned in 2021 after the deep defeat of this party in the local elections.

He was the Prime Minister of North Macedonia from January 16, 2022 to January 25, 2024.
