Tensions in the north, Lajçak and Escobar visit Pristina and Belgrade

The American envoy, Gabriel Escobar, and the European one, Miroslav Lajçak, will travel to Belgrade today, while tomorrow they will visit Pristina.

The purpose of their visit is to encourage the parties to end the tensions in the north of Kosovo and to continue the dialogue between them. There have been constant calls, both from the West and from the USA, to calm the situation in the 3 northern municipalities: Zubin Potok, Leposavic and Zveçan.

Serbs have been protesting for more than a week demanding the removal of newly elected presidents and special units of the Kosovo Police.

Municipal buildings are under the protection of NATO's KFOR. 30 soldiers were injured a week ago after the use of weapons and hard objects by Serbian protesters.

The US and the EU ask Kosovo to remove special police units from municipal buildings, the temporary relocation of new mayors to other alternative offices and the organization of new elections as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Serbia is required to withdraw the Serbian armed forces stationed near the border with Kosovo and reduce the state of readiness, maintain the peace of the protesters in the north and ensure the participation of Kosovo Serbs in new elections.
