Court dismisses case against Trump over classified documents
A federal judge's decision to dismiss Donald Trump's classified documents case on Monday was a surprise end to what was once seen as one of the strongest criminal cases brought against the former president last year.

Judge Aileen Cannon in Florida dismissed on Monday the court case with criminal charges against former President Donald Trump for keeping classified documents, writes CNN

Cannon, who was appointed to the job by former President Trump during his tenure, ruled that special counsel Jack Smith, who is leading the investigation, was illegally appointed to the role and that he lacked the legal authority to filed such a lawsuit. Judge Cannon's 93-page order states that the special prosecutor must have been appointed with the approval of Congress.

"The post of Special Prosecutor effectively usurps an important legislative power, transfers it to a department head, and puts at risk the structural freedom embodied in the separation of powers," the judge's order reads.

The decision comes just days after a failed assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on former President Trump, who is expected to receive the nomination as the official Republican presidential candidate during this week's national convention in Milwaukee.

Prosecutors are likely to appeal the decision. In previous court cases, courts have ruled in favor of the Justice Department's authority to appoint special prosecutors for politically motivated investigations.
