USAID closure, Russia welcomes US administration's decision

Russia has expressed satisfaction with the closure of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), describing it as a mechanism for interference in the affairs of other states.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that this decision confirms Moscow's accusations against USAID, which it has expelled from its territory since 2012.

USAID, which operated with a budget of over $40 billion for humanitarian and development assistance, has now been placed under the responsibility of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Russia expelled USAID from its territory in 2012, accusing it of funding opposition protests against the Kremlin and interfering in elections.

It also accuses him of supporting anti-government movements in neighboring states, primarily in Ukraine and Georgia, with the aim of causing the fall of government authorities and the coming to power of individuals more friendly to Washington and more hostile to Russia.

"It is a machine for interference in internal affairs, a mechanism for changing regimes, the political order, the structure of the state," Zakharova said.

The US agency announced on Wednesday that all of its personnel (including those abroad) will be placed on administrative leave starting Friday.

After that, the American agency was placed under the responsibility of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

USAID was created in 1961 by an act of the US Congress. It manages a budget of over $40 billion for humanitarian and development assistance worldwide. It employs approximately 10,000 people, two-thirds of whom serve abroad.
