What happens in Iran when a president dies in office?

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died after the helicopter he was traveling in crashed, an Iranian official and the Mehr news agency reported on Monday.

A helicopter carrying Raisi and his foreign minister crashed in the mountainous terrain of northwestern Iran on May 19 while returning from a visit to neighboring Azerbaijan, and as a result all members of the board are dead.

But what happens in Iran when a president dies in office?

Below Reuters has summarized what Iran's Constitution says happens when a president is incapacitated or dies in office:
* If a president dies in office, Article 131 of the Islamic Republic's constitution states that the first vice president - who is Mohammad Mokhber - takes office, with the confirmation of the supreme leader, who has the final say in all matters of state in Iran.

A council consisting of the first vice-president, the speaker of the parliament and the head of the judiciary must organize new elections for the president within a maximum period of 50 days.

Otherwise, Raisi was elected president in 2021 and according to the usual calendar, the next presidential election would be held in 2025.

Now, according to constitutional rules, they are expected to be held in early July.
