Women in Albania live an average of 2.4 years less than those in the EU

People in the Mediterranean countries of which Albania is a part usually live longer than in other countries, but in Albania women lived less than the European average in 2022.

Life expectancy at birth in the EU for women reached 83.3 years was 5.4 years higher than for men (77.9 years) by 2022. This gender gap in favor of women continued in all EU regions according to today's Eurostat data. Women in Albania had a life expectancy of 80.9 years in 2022, an average of 2.4 years less than in the EU, according to INSTAT.

For women in the EU, life expectancy at birth was 83.3 years in 2022 (an increase of 0.4 compared to 2021, while in Albania women's life expectancy increased by 2.2 years between 2021 and 2002, as a result of the mitigation of the effect on mortality caused by the Covid pandemic - 19.

In 2022, life expectancy at birth for women in the EU was 5.4 years longer than for men, with variations between EU countries. While in Albania this difference was 3.6 years with 2022.

According to Eurostat, Life expectancy at birth for women peaked in the Spanish capital region of Comunidad de Madrid (87.7 years), while 2 other Spanish regions, Comunidad Foral de Navarra (86.9 years) and Castilla y León (86.7 years), had the second and third highest.

The lowest life expectancy at birth for women was recorded in the most remote French region of Mayotte (74.4 years), followed by 3 Bulgarian regions: Severozapaden (76.4 years), Severen tsentralen (77.0 years) and Yugoiztochen (77.6 years).

When it comes to the life expectancy of men, Albania is only 0.6 years behind the EU. Men in Albania had a life expectancy of 77.3 years in 2022, while in the European Union 77.9 years.

Madrid is at the top of the east in life expectancy for both men and women

As was the case for women, the highest level of life expectancy at birth for men was recorded in the Spanish capital region of Comunidad de Madrid at 82.4 years. Italy's northern region of Provincia Autonoma di Trento and the Swedish capital region of Stockholm (both 82.3 years) had the next highest rates.

In contrast, 3 regions had a male life expectancy of less than 70.0 years. The lowest levels were recorded in the Bulgarian region of Severozapaden (68.7 years), followed by Latvia (69.4 years) and Severen tsentralen (69.6 years), also in Bulgaria.

Large gender gaps in life expectancy at birth within regions. The largest regional gender gaps were recorded in the Baltic countries and in some Polish and Romanian regions. The largest gap was recorded in Latvia, where life expectancy at birth for women was 10.0 years higher than for men.

Differences in life expectancy at birth between women and men were generally much smaller in Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands and Sweden. However, the smallest gender gap was observed in Mayotte in France, where life expectancy at birth for women was 0.4 years higher than for men./ Monitor.al
