Hunger strike in Greek prisons, including Albanian prisoners

About 1,589 prisoners of Albanian origin and Greek prisoners have been on hunger strike for several days in prisons in Greece.

The reason is a circular issued by the Greek Ministry of Justice regarding the way of granting permits and parole for prisoners.

According to the denunciations of the prisoners themselves, the circular in question was made in order to keep some of the terrorists of the notorious organization "November 17" in prison, as well as those convicted of the Golden Dawn criminal organization, cases of rapists of minors or murders of women. , but it also affects other convicts who say that they are unjustly penalized.

Convicts held in the prisons of Chania, Halkida, Corfu, Dhomoko, Nafplio, Patra, Neapoli and Larisa participate in the strike.

The Greek Ministry of Justice admits that the situation is difficult and that it is reviewing cases from time to time with the aim of excluding from this circular those convicts who are deemed to have been rehabilitated or are not considered dangerous.

Prisoners also denounce cases in which prison leaders pressure them to stop the strike.
