High informality in tourism as a result of Booking and AirBnB, what is required

As it aims to become one of the most important sectors of the economy, tourism has some important problems. One of them is the pronounced lack of labor force.

The crisis is expected to deepen in the coming years, given current demographics and emigration trends. The sustainability of the sector depends on building capacity to address this issue.

According to a survey conducted by UNDP, it is imperative that the government address structural issues, support the sector through subsidies and improve infrastructure.

Another problem for the sector is the treatment of informality. Tourism in Albania seems to be accompanied by high rates of informality. The increased use of international booking and travel platforms such as Booking.com, AirBnB and TripAdvisor has further exacerbated the situation.

On the one hand, these channels offer significant growth opportunities for this sector, but on the other hand, they have increased unfair competition and informality.

Therefore, the drafting of regulations and monitoring mechanisms is required to ensure equal rules. It is further suggested that the policy makers do a better marketing of tourism, since most of them are local and Albanian visitors from Kosovo.
