Former Italian Prime Minister: We had no information about the energy agreement, we will also hold Albanians accountable

Former Italian Prime Minister: We had no information about the energy agreement,

Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has commented on the recent agreement between the United Arab Emirates, Albania and Italy on renewable energy.

Speaking on Syri TV, he said he was not informed at any point by the government. Renzi stressed that as an opposition MP, he and Italian citizens were informed about the agreement only through the media, as well as about the issue of migrants.

Renzi demanded transparency from the government regarding this agreement and stated that the Italian parliament will seek an in-depth debate to understand who will bear the financial burden of these agreements.

"None of us have ever discussed this agreement. Maybe it is a good agreement, I cannot know this because I am a parliamentarian, an opposition MP, and I have heard about this agreement just like you, from the newspapers, just like the one about immigrants.
It is important in a democracy to inform people, that one can say that it is a good idea, agree on energy, or can say I do not agree.
What is strange is that these personal relationships produce agreements worth billions of euros, like the one on immigrants and the one on energy where nobody knows anything.
We ask the Prime Minister to explain to us what this agreement is. In Italy, the gas bill is increasing more and more. In 2025, an increase of 15% is predicted and for a family that barely makes ends meet, this is a big blow.
I think the media is very important for citizens to create an idea.
I am making a commitment. In the Italian parliament we will ask for a debate on this agreement, to understand who pays, how "It is financed, who is working on this. So we will do a transparency job that the government seems not to do.
If it is not your government that will give you information, it will be a pleasure to receive information from the Italian parliament on how this money will be spent, of Italians and Albanians. It is not their personal money, they can do anything with it, but it is the citizens' money, for this it must be accounted for ," said Renzi.
