The new port in Porto Romano, to which the services of the current port of Durrës will be transferred, will be financed with budget funds.

According to the tables accompanying the 2024 draft budget, the construction of the New Port in Porto Romano will cost 43 billion lek (410) million euros and the financing will be provided from the state budget mainly with foreign financing.

Next year, about 8.6 billion lek or about 82 million euros are scheduled to be allocated. In 2025, 13 billion ALL are planned and 13 billion ALL in 2026, when the new port is expected to be completed.

The construction of this facility was previously discussed as a form of financing with a concession or public-private PPP cooperation, but the government has decided to finance it from the budget.

According to previous official announcements, the first phase of construction includes the construction of the container terminal, the connection to the road infrastructure, railway, sewage network, electricity and water supply.

In this phase, a marine facility will also be built, the scope of which has not yet been determined.

In this phase, the quays, common buildings, the building of customs offices and other agencies, the main gate of the port, the security and civil defense facilities, the offices of the port captain and the control tower of VTS, substations, etc. will be built.

In addition to processing about 2 million containers of goods per year, the new Port of Porto Romanos is expected to process up to 1 million passengers per year, although this service was left to be carried out by the Yacht Marina in Durrës.

The Port Authority of Durrës has already concluded a consultancy contract with the association of operators "HASKONINGDHV NEDERLAND BV - ADEC ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY LLC - ABKONS SH.PK -TAULANT SH.PK - GEO-ENG SH.PK", for the preparation of the technical project and documents of the tender for the construction of the integrated Port of Durrës in Porto Romano as well as equipment/superstructure for cargo handling.

Royal HaskoningDHV which has been working on the feasibility study for the new Port in Porto Romano has finalized a total cost of around 2 billion euros for the overall construction of the port.

The first phase of works is expected to be completed in 2025, but the entire port will be completely finished in 2050.

The commercial port of Durrës will be moved to Porto Romano because a new project with luxury buildings and a yacht marina will be developed in its place, an investment with participating companies from the United Arab Emirates. The transfer of commercial services from the Port of Durrës to Porto Romano will take place in several stages over a period of about 20 years./ Monitor
