IRI poll: Albanians support democracy and fight against corruption, economy

A recent poll conducted by the International Republican Institute's ( IRI ) Center for Insights into Survey Research (CISR) has found that Albanians show strong support for the fight against corruption and for democratic governance, while the economy remains the main concern.

According to the survey, 76% of Albanian citizens trust the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), highlighting high expectations for the role of this institution. Furthermore, 51% of Albanians declare that they would not support a candidate or party that seeks to limit the work of SPAK.

Another important finding of the survey is that 80% of respondents believe that democracy is the best form of government, reflecting widespread support for democratic values.

Paul McCarthy, Europe Director for IRI, commented on the results:
“With parliamentary elections expected on May 11, it is a positive sign that an overwhelming majority of Albanians want to see the fight against corruption continue. Anti-corruption efforts increase transparency and accountability among elected officials, strengthening citizens’ trust in democracy.”

Economy, Albanians' main concern
The survey noted that the economy remains the biggest priority for Albanians. The high cost of living is cited as the main concern by 80% of respondents, while unemployment ranks second at 45%.

The survey was conducted between October 3 and November 2, 2024, using the Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) technique. The sample included 1,200 Albanians, selected based on a stratified and multi-stage methodology, ensuring representation by age group, region, urbanity, gender and education, based on the parameters of the 2023 Census.

This survey comes at a key moment for Albania, as the country prepares for parliamentary elections, underlining that the fight against corruption and economic development remain at the top of citizens' priorities.
